OK; here's the deal. 2004 Fatboy, CARBED, 7 K miles. Although it's only done this twice in 4 years, it did it twice the other night. Shut bike down, went to start it a couple minutes later & it "kicked back" on the starter with that Godawful noise. Did it again later on & I got the "hesitation" with the kickback.
Now, I know about the battery connections being tight, which they were when I got home & checked. Also, I know an old battery can cause that too. So I pulled the battery & brought it to my dealership & had it load tested, and even though it was put into service in '07, it still tested good at 275 CCA.
I have to say that any 5 year old battery would be big time suspect on any starting issues, before I would even attempt any further diagnosis, I would replace the battery, passing load test is not the full story on the battery, temp, of both engine and ambient temps affect how the battery will perform. at 5 years old, you are due for one any how, replace it and see if the problem continues, that batt. is going to strand you
What he said. The load test is quick and the starting of the bike may be longer. If the battery cannot take the longer load, it will weaken and allow a kickback if the bike has not started.
Many, including myself solved the majority of these kick backs with upgrading the compensator to the SE version. does not eliminate, but does reduce it considerably. If the engine stops just as a compression stroke is starting then there is a stop when starting. Of course the battery could be tired
I haven't looked to see if the new SE comp will fit the older bikes (if they have one that will fit) but the older comps were different and not really a problem except for loosening up
Look at the Daytona Twin Tec website, there is a discussion about this, "hot soak" start and kick back. Mine does it too, and I have mostly eliminated it, but I think some of it comes from short tripping the bike. I took it on a long (>4K mi) road trip and it has lessened the symptoms dramatically. I am thinking it has carbon build up in the cylinders and raises cranking pressure maybe.
I'm with the guys saying battery. One of my buds has a 103 ci S&S. If he tries to start it with anything less than a full charge on the battery, it kicks back and snaps the drive belt. He's gonna put in a compression release I think.

So...Anyone have any ideas?
I was having the same issues on my bike and replaced the battery. Cured it.

Hey guys; thanks for the replies. Even though the load test said OK, I think I'm gonna bite the bullet & spend the bean & a quarter for a new battery. 5 years in the Florida heat prolly has it a little weak.
dickey, hope this will cure your problem. I've got a 2009 Ultra Classic, bought in May 2010, last year put about 8k (km) and this year another 8 upto date. Few month ago the bike started acting, just like yours. When starting after a short stop I get a kickback with a horrible sound of crashing gears. I had that for a while.
2 days ago it was time for 16k km (10k miles) oil; change, and I pulled the plug out of primary chain and had a handful of metal chips, and they do look like they came of the starter ring gear.
Check your primary oil drain plug for metal chips.
