Default Importing HD from USA

I live in Toronto and plan to buy a HD Fat Boy from USA. I am told that I cannot import a new HD from USA . So I am now looking at lightly used Fat Boy from the US.

I see some good deals on cycle trader.com. But, how can I verify the authEncity of the ad from private posting?

Again I have heard that there are few mechanics in US who go and check the quality of the bike and send an assessment. Do you know any websites the list reliable mechanics at a nominal price?

Again do you know any good shipping companies that can take cre of Canadian customs as well? Again at a nominal price.

This may be a silly question but what if you came to the States and bought whatever you want and take it home?

Yes. But, making trips to the states without Being sure that the ad is geniune or the bike is in good shape may add to the cost. Secondly some bikes are in far off distance from Tornto. Travelling can be expensive. Thirdly, as winter is approaching soon, riding it back in Winter may get hard

I'd double check on that. Who told you that you cannot?

Just my opinion, but if you are going to pay someone to check out the bike, then pay to have it shipped, and pay a broker to get it through customs, I don't think you will be saving any money. I have bought several cars and bikes in the states but I will only buy if I can check bike out myself and pick up and import the bike myself. Getting a bike through customs yourself is easy and the trip to pick it up is usually a lot of fun as well

Makes sense Gregfri. Are you aware of any mechanics who can assess the condition of the vehicle? That would let me know if it is worth taking the trip.

you can import them, but if the bike has warently left you can';t use that unless you drive back to the US. thank deeley for that. also they make you take it to a "certified" inspection place which once again is a harley shop (another deeley bonus) where they have to change a few parts. so if your looking at a bike out of warenty it can be worth it, just do your homework befor you put any money down or agree on a price.

one thing to note, I was told by a dealer that they had to either change the speedo or put stickers on it to make it metric, funny I bought a bike from the dealer that they imported that doens't have any metric whats so ever....

as per RIV's website every harley model is a "note 1" which means

"Note-1 confirms that models listed REQUIRE some modifications to meet Canadian standards. Harley-Davidson Motor Company has informed Transport Canada that ALL modifications MUST be performed (and documented) by an authorized Canadian Harley-Davidson retailer. Modifications may include; fender, tail lamps, odometer/speedometer and labelling."

you CANNOT import a Harley that has not been previously registered in an Americans name, and no the dealer doesn't count. But you can have a buddy buy it and transfer it. Or you can buy used. Maybe buy from an HD dealer, many of the guys down here do that. Theres also a dealer down here who does it for you, (Robinson Motorcycle) he used to be a dealer until there was a falling out so now he imports US bikes and sells them over here. He is near to Windsor. ITs not a big deal to get it across either just takes about a day of screwing around with customs. Do some homework! Teflon

My bike (ultra ), required no modifications to be registered in Canada, but some models may. Clearing customs is as easy as paying GST and filling out an RIV form. I was told you cannot bring in a Brand new bike, but there may be ways around that too
