My bike has V&H BSL pipes. They are the best looking pipes anywhere. They are kind of loud though. I'd like to be a better neighbor and quieten them down a bit. I see on their website they have a quiet baffle available which leads to the questions, where do they install and how much teardown is required to do it? How much does that affect the tuning? Will I need to get a complete retune? I've got the SERT which many seem to think is the least desirable unit. Should I look into a different unit in conjunction with quieting it and if so which one? What else do I need to ask but don't know enough yet to ask? Thanks for any and all advice and input.
the baffles are a direct replacement for the baffles that are already in the pipes. take a locking screw out, pull the baffles, slide the quiet baffles in, put bolt back in. pretty easy. i found the quiet baffles to not really quiet the pipes down substantially, but did make them a little quieter, and deepened the tone of the exhaust.
you really shouldn't need a new tune for this. try it, and if you find you have issues, then you can look into a retune. mine didn't need it, not on my 02 sporty carbed, or my 07 efi road king.
Keep in mind that those quiet baffles aren't quiet. They will knock the sound level down 2 or 3 db and have a deeper tone but don't expect a dramatic change. You'll still probably **** off most of your neighbors. On the bright side you shouldn't have to change tuning. Maybe someone will chime in with some alternatives.
My V&H had these cheese graters installed. Practically straight pipes. Sounded great but too, too loud. Put the quite baffles in, but they still set off my car alarm, haha.
Chances are you will have to rap the new baffles with like a fiberglass packing that is included when you purchase them. The install is pretty easy though so im sure you can handle it. Shouldnt need much tuning if any afterwards.
If you wanna learn more about the difference in sound just search for a comparison video on youtube.
I have the same concern with my V&H straight shots. They are open and look line Benway's photo. I'm getting a lot of decel pop and I'm most certain I'm pissin off the neighbours. Thinking of getting the quiet baffs too but am also not sure if it will decrease the performance.
Ok, so the baffles are going to be near the outlet and I don't have to halfway dismantle the bike to change them out. That's good. It won't be night and day but it will quieten it somewhat and make for a somewhat better neighbor. Loud pipes don't do anything but make for bad neighbors and I don't want to be one of those.
The V&H quiet baffles don't make much of a difference. I put the smartpartz baffles in with the quiets and am now not thinking of getting rid of the short shots.

The Hard Kore baffles can make your bike run richer, but I went from restrictive SE slip ons to the less restrictive Freedom Performance pipes.
A co-worker said he was surprised how quiet my bike was with the shorter exhaust.
It's not quiet, just less than many would suspect looking at the exhaust.
