I've been looking at jackets for a little while. What do you guys think of jackets with armor like the leather FXRG mid weight, nice but around $600.
I have also looked at the Fox Creek jackets online, but no armor and there prices seem good.
I guess where I'm going with this....Is armor needed? I know it will probably be a good thing when not if I go down.
If you guys/gals have any other suggestions for jackets throw them out there. Thanks
Armor really helps to prevent injury from bouncing off the pavement. Riding jackets without armor will protect from road rash, but you can still get bruised pretty badly. An alternative to a jacket or pants with armor is to get a seperate armored suit from a company such as Bohn Body Armor and then wear a non armored jacket over it. Some people find armor jackets to be less comfortable.
People complain about the Harley stuff because of the prices, but it's good quality and will last. I don't have armor in any of my jackets, but I'd never knock a guy for literally saving his skin......besides, you can always take the armor out, if you decide you don't like it.
Pick out a Harley jacket and then search it on ebay, I bought my last one and my daughters jacketthat way and saved a fortune.
I'm a big fan of the armor, however the cheap armor that comes with most gear is just that... cheap.
For very little cash, you can get much higher quality armor to replace the cheap stuff with. Hard plastic and dense foam, vs rubber and soft foam.
I've got too many jackets.
a few insulated leather no armour -I paid 60 bucks for my favorite orange and black 3m thinsulated thick leather riding jacket at the AMA SuperBike races at Mid-Ohio Raceway this past summer - Harley stuff sells cheap at the sportbike event!!
a few uninsulated leather no armour - H-D dealership freebies
a few insulated textile with armour (Joe Rocket)
a 2 piece AGV leather suit
even have textile riding pants (Joe Rocket)
and several cold weather jackets, the kind that suck while riding, but great if not riding
Ireceived an FXRGjacket for Christmas, the mrs paid $415 plus s/h from one of the HD dealers that does eBay. It weighs a ton, and I'm still getting used to the "armor" but it is a really nice jacket - and I love the smell of new leathers! It's replacing a leatherjacket I've been riding with for almost 20 years. Most of the other leather goods(chaps, gloves, etc.) can be had much cheaper elsewhere, but IMO HD leather jackets are worth the money.
