Hey guys looking to maybe do a deal on a bike its a 1980 Sportster 1000cc. The guy says the bottom casing is junk an it comes with no title. He says when you buy the bottom casing you get a certificatite of orgin on the casing an you take that to the DMV to get a title is this correct?
That guy is full of it! Since the early 70's the frame #'s are associated with the title. Older bikes were titled to the case. To get that bike titled you need a frame w/title and new cases. It's a parts bike.
There's alot of B.S. out there with guys tryng to sell a bike w/o title"yeah it's EASY".
So I need to check with the WV DMV were I am at an see what I need to do bout getting a title. The bike is in VA. I thought those bikes went bike the number on the frame an not on the engine just wanted to double check it.
ok I checked with the WV DMV an they told me that is the states of VA & WV a bike can not be sold unless it has a title & without a title it is considered a illegal sale in both states. What years will work with a 1980 Sportster & could you just switch everything from this bike to a frame that has a title an do it that way? Well the thing is I got a 94 Electra Glide Classic an I am looking to trade it off to a guy to do all the work on my classic car for the bike. The Electra Glide is my first Harley an my first street bike an first time riding a street bike an I am 5'7 160lbs. My plan is to do the deal on the bike so the car gets done an look for a cheap bike up an do some trading with some stuff an go for a bike up to 2K buy something like a old Sportster or something like that an get use to it & buy a Electra Glide Ex Police bike an fix it the way I want it an that will give me a chance to get use to riding a smaller bike like the Sportster an move up the Electra Glide in bout a year or two once I get it done an get use to riding some. On the bike I am looking for just looking for something in like a 500 mile radius to Charleston WV an up to 2K with doing some trading other than that must be a Harley an looking at every angle bout swapping stuff to another bike frame with title rolling chassis basket case etc.. plan to work on this one over the winter so not picky as to what condition just as long as its a Harley an I can get a title an in the price range an distance.

Can anybody decode this VIN # 1HD1CAN196Y12198 & tell me were I can find cases for this bike? It a 80 Sportster 1000cc an was told the bottom cases are busted how hard are they to replace an were can I find them at? An with the cases busted what all might be wrong with it was told it might have been over reved. What would it cost to fix this bike & what would this bike be worth fixed should I get it or wait an just get more money an buy a better bike before winter. The bike is close to my house bout 2 hours out each way.
