So I have a 2011 FLTRU. Supposedly, I could change just the exhaust without doing a download because the system could handle changing JUST the intake, or JUST the exhaust, without needing a new download. In a vain hope to get some heat relief ( I had already added slip-ons ) and had the dealer put on a more open air cleaner and do the Stage 1 download for the pipes and A/C.
SO, now I want to change the head pipes (to get rid of the cat). Can I still change the exhaust without needing a download since it has had a download forthe pipes and A/C.
So NOW, if I change the pipes without changing the A/C, can I get away without the download like I did before ?
My under standing is that you already got the Stage 1 download so just changing the pipes again won't change it. It will still be a Stage 1. You won't go out of Stage 1 until you do something like change the cam. If you had it done at the HD dealer it is still running lean anyway. By Calif. law the dealer can't make it run as rich as it should to lower temperatures of exhaust etc. You could try some XiED units or a Fuel Pack of some kind. JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION THOUGH.
I want to get rid of the catalytic converter first. I'm going to save the pipes with the cat for storage, so I'll have to get new head pipes. Oh, darnnnn, "sorry honey, but it's for your personal comfort" and I'll see if she buys it. After our trip to Yosemite next week she might start to understand what I'm talking about.
Then I'm going to figure out which way I wanna go with a tuner to fatten up the mixture. Obviously, that'll cool the engine, but I can deal with that heat for the winter. My immediate cncern is the heat near my right foot.
And obviously, after the pipes are changed and I get a tuner, it'll be time for a proper tune. It's over 30,000 miles now, so I think it's broken-in enough.
I just want to be able to put the pipes on and ride it while I'm waiting to get it tuned properly.
Most likely your bike will be alright to ride after your changes but it will be real lean and hot. The smart thing is change the pipes, buy the tuner, and tune the bike asap. Getting that bike fat will reduce some of the heat. With that said, it is an air cooled engine. They got hot with the bump in cubic inches and being lean. You still have the bump in cubic inches. JMO
