I walked into a dealership in Lansing in 2000. I had 5,000 cash to put down. The salesman had about 10 bikes on the floor, they were all storage bikes that belonged to other people. He told me to give him the deposite and let him know what I wanted and he would call me in 4 or 5 months, no guarantees. Now that same dealership has probably 30 or so new bikes on the floor and I don't know how many in the back in crates. Times change.
When I walked in to FTL HD in 96, I was told the only Harley he could get was an 883. He also said he wouldn't sell it to me cause I was too big for it. I bought a 1200 Sporty Custom there in 99, and there have been bikes around ever since. Could care less about the market, just want to ride.

Well I may be deceiving myself but one of the justifications I use for spending so much for a Harley is that the money is not lost on something that will depreciate down to almost $0 like a metric..... If I had the luxury of knowing exactly which bike I would want forever then I guess it would not really matter. But I figure each change of bikes could cost up to $5000 or more in lost money if I don't buy them right and buy the right ones. The SE's seem to hold value better but they also seem to be harder to sell. Do you think the CVO bikes are a good investiment?
My dealer says he is having a very hard time getting Sportsters. Not sure why.
The Sporty is more of an entry level bike for Harley so maybe this indicates better days ahead for the bigger bikes. If new blood (more newbies like me ) come into the market buying Sporties, they will be trading up as time goes by. Motorcycling is getting much more media attention now, which could be good or bad.
All the bike companies enjoyed a lot of business at premium prices.. Now the over-exposure is doing to them what it did to the beatles. No waiting a year or knowing a guy that knows a guy that has a harley. Production equalized with demand and couldn't slow down if the gettin' is good. Now the dealers have a showroom floor slam full of new scoots and Ebay is slam full of used ones.. Almost like boats.. They say the best days in the life of a boatowner are the day he bought a boat and the day he sold it. Now it's a buyers market for used bikes but the moco hasn't realized that yet on the new bikes. Instead of just continuing to build a good machine and ride out the slower demand, now they're trying to change every year and can't leave a good thing alone. 200mm tires for fat-tires' sake.. prime example.

if you want to invest in a bike , you need to be looking at original knuckles and pans not evos or twins

Hey Squish another question: I know the difference between Plasma and LCD, but what is this DLP. Is that the same or different. BTW I am leaning toward LCD.

Off topic, sorry.
Hey Solid Lifter, DLP is "digital light processing" and it's different than (conventional) LCD or Plasma. If you're interested in the technology, here's a link: http://www.dlp.com/
The DLP sets are flat screen but not flat panel. Meaning, you can't wall mount because they're about 16" deep. There are a few that are somewhat shallower.
But, I say Plasma. Most bang for the buck, bigger screen sizes, better color saturation. If you're seriously shopping go to www.avsforum.com for some great discussions and advice.
