I wear plugs all day for work, so I'm used to them. If I didn't have them in on the bike I'd feel weird! They are just part of the ride experience now, just like pulling on the helmet.
Nothing fancy, just the cheap throw-aways I get from work.
never ride without them. i'm 61 and my ears have been ringing non-stop for at least 10 years.
too many years of ridin', rock-n-roll, chainsaws, lawnmowers, etc., and i've lost way too much hearing.
for all of you, but ESPECIALLY you younger folks: take care of your hearing NOW. if you don't you'll wake up some day and say to yourself "why didn't i listen back then when i could have done something to prevent hearing loss.
and, oh b-t-w; wearing ear plugs doesn't leave you deaf. i still hear cars, some wind, and even carry on conversations with sweetie when she rides with me. but i'm doing what i can to save what hearing i have left.

What he said.
I'm 65 and the constant ringing is not anything I'd wish on anybody.
I have several different types for diff rides: none for around town, 25 decible plastic type reduction for medium trips, and 33 decibel foam type for long interstate ride. Problem with the 33's is speed: between the windshield and the quietness, It feels like 70, but speedo says 80-85. (2012 RK with rinehart slip ons). Probably need to have the gauge checked...
It depends on which bike I ride. If I'm on my Heritage, no, between the windshiels and wind deflectors, the wind noise isn't bad. If I'm on my Softail Std, yes, because the wind noise is too much for me to take. Lately, I have had my noise reducing earphones in listening to music on my iphone.
Does a full face helmet prevent wind noise damage on highway rides?
I can't answer that because I alwayswear a FF helmet.
But I get percussive wind noise through my skull, which earplugs really don't help with.
I DO have custom ear plugs, which cuts down all the other noises. But even without the earplugs, the wind noise drowns out all the othera noises.
Plus, I have another problem, and earplugs can cause ear infections for me.
I should find them and try wearing them again. They are great for everyone else but me.
I would recommend them to everybody despite the problems I have with them.
