I'm in the concrete business, and all of my crew is Mexican. Damn good guys. Most come from Michoacan Mex, and even some of them are leery about going down there. Friend of mine has a framing crew and one of his guys who is from there said his sister was recently murdered by a cartel. Hell, he's from there and says he's not planning on going back.
No one in Mexico is allowed to carry a gun. You get caught with one, or even a damn bullet you'll be spending a long time in a third world prison till someone you know can bribe the officials and get you out.
Going down there unless absolutely necessary would be stupid imo...
I would like to make that but it is too far for me at this time of year. Looks like it will be a good time. Have you been to this before and is it an annual rally? If so, maybe next year I could hook up with some south Texas companeros and head south. Have not ridden in Mexico in several years.
Good luck down there, make sure people here know where you are at all times. Make sure they got some money for your release. I had two friends get kidnapped by mistake. They let them go after a real good beating, stole their car and money. For me, I'll see Mexico on the news and the travel channel. No need for me to go somewhere unarmed and the people hate you before you even get there.
I don't cross the border anymore. It used to be great to go down there and party, surf etc... Even most of my Mexican friends don't go south of the border anymore.
