Keep it up where it's handy. Screw the reach and the heat potential. Who gives a rat's *** what it looks like. You going to a contest?
If the question is, "do you care what your Harley looks like?" Then the answer is..... yes.
I'll probably keep it up solely because of the heat issue, but if anyone has had a contrary experience, let me know so I can make an educated decision based on all of the viable options.
I've got a plastic drink holder mounted on the horizontal section of the front crash bar. I put a thermos in it. No heat issues on the thermos or the plastic drink holder. Hope the pic shows it (its on the left side). I've only had it this way across a dozen states so far, so there may still be issues.....

Thank you for answering my question. I think I'll give it a try since it seems a lot more out of the way.
Nah, I reach down to my highway pegs all the time to fix my pants when they fly up. I figure a drink in the same vicinity will be easy to get to, but it gets a bit toasty in a 10 inch radius of that motor, which is my fear.
I think you need to get some pant leg suspenders like these:
I have some similar suspenders, but I only put them on for long rides out of laziess. They clack when I walk and the material is tearing where it sits under my boots, and they are kind of a pain to put on and take off all the time. I get lazy and don't wear them to and from work, etc. Maybe I should get some better quality ones- I picked mine up at a swap meet for 10 bucks.
I guess cup holders are good if you can't wait until you can pull in and get a drink of whatever. I don't think I will be drinking while driving my bike. but that's just me. On a long ride I'll throw a bottle of water in the tool bag. I have never used it. Plus they just don't fit anywhere and I keep taking thingies off the bike, not putting thingies on it.
i try to keep my opinions to myself unless asked. you asked, so here goes:
i don't much care what anyone else thinks of me or my scoot. i've got a bottle holder on the left riser of my handle bars. the holder is from the local bicycle shop and is the one that folks put on their bicycle down tube. a 20 oz. soda fits into it perfectly and i've got a coozie (sp?) that zips up and covers the 20 oz. bottle all the way up to the cap. i don't happen to drink beer, but truly enjoy pepsi on a ride, especially when it's hot.
your question, though, was about choosing between your crash bar & handle bar. i can't imagine reaching down every time i want a sip. regardless of how ugly it might be on my handle bar that's where it's staying. call me lazy if you want, but the older i get the easier i want things to be.

Never had a cup holder on any of my bikes. Probably never will have a radio or cup holder on any of my motorcycles. Just preference. Looks okay on the your bars. I wouldn't put it on my highway bars. That is where I rest my legs on open road.

OP: here's your answer unless you're just in it for the profile. Judging from the apes and whip, it looks like you're maybe into the profile thing. Not judging here, just being honest - if profiling is your thing, lose the cup-holder and go for it.
Got one of those Bare Foot ******* cup-holders on my EGC (mounted on the bars). They're a great unit and cheap to boot. Just the thing for morning coffee or an insulated cold drink on those hot days. I ride a lot and like a few simple comforts and don't much give a rusty flock what anyone else thinks.
