Does anybody know the difference between Starlight Black, Midnight Black and Vivid Black ??? I need to order touch-up paint for an all black 2006 4.5 gallon Sportster Tank and black touch-up paint for a 2 tone Grey/Black 4.5 sportster tank.
Black is black!!! Manufacturers select color names to suite their preference but whatever they call it, black is black.
The only exception is for some of the pearls and/or metallics out there.
OMG no, black is not black. If you look in the formula databases from the paint companies, there are thousands of formulas for blacks. Aside from the obvious of those which have pearls or metallics, there are those which have a touch of red, blue, green... The deepest blacks have about 2% violet in them.
Black is not black. Black is one of the hardest colors to match on a touch up. Look up the paint code for your bike if it's still factory paint. If it's a repaint all bets are off.
Harley VIVID BLACK is NON metallic. ANY black touch up paint will work. When you start throwing words like Midnight black and Starlight black around, I guarantee those are metallic blacks and you're talking a whole other ballgame. But for your black you can go to any parts store and get a GM or Chrysler or Ford black touch up and it will work

Thank you! This is exactly the point I was making in my previous post (#2).
And for the guy that said black is the hardest color to match, he has obviously never worked in the autobody repair industry, because that statement is as far from truth as it gets. When I worked in that industry I loved repairing black cars because color-matching was simply a non-issue with black. It matches perfectly every time.

For just touching up a chip any black should be okay. But black is not the same for any vehicle. It is a mixed colour. You actually have to add colour's to the formula even for straight black.
That's correct; equal parts of the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) make black. Change the proportion of any of the primary colors, will result in varying shades of black....
