If you owned a second hand bike you'd understand wanting to talk to the original owner to see if there was anymore information to know about the bike you just bought.
I DO own a second hand bike. I bought an '08 in '10 from a local dealer and contacting the previous owner never even entered my mind. I also don't know anyone who has done what OP is proposing. Do you??

Don't you think that it's the dealer's responsibility to inform the new owner of any mods that were done to the bike? Let's say the bike was a trade-in - how many guys would walk in and not mention every single mod they've done to it, in order to get a better trade-in value? When selling it, what dealer isn't going to list/mention every single mod to a potential buyer, in order to get more money out of it?

And in a worse case scenario, it could have been in an accident or flood.
That's kind of a moot point. After the purchase of a used vehicle, unless there's a written warranty, I don't think that you really have any recourse. Seriously, what would you do with that information after the fact, other than to let it eat you up inside and be paranoid about every little noise or inconsistency you think you hear/see.

IDK, I guess it's just me, but IMO bikes are pretty easily inspected for damage/repairs and all but a very few mods. I sold a bike on craigslist in the spring. If that guy has any questions, I'd have no problem answering them. But I'd feel a little invaded if someone stalked me down and started asking me questions about a bike I sold to someone else or to a dealer in the past. I mean, I don't think it's illegal, but it's just not something that I'd do.

I'll be interested to see if OP contacts the previous owner and how it works out. I hope he keeps us updated.

Never did this with a bike, but I've always wanted to ask former boyfriends about a new girl I started dating. Or, maybe not!

Not to be redundant or offensive in any way I still believe that talking to the prior owners could be a good thing when you feel the bike has had some motor work. If I had put 13-1 pistons in a bike and decided to trade it in, I would not mention that to the dealer because I wouldnt want the dealer to be afraid of my bike. 13-1 pistons wont be a problem for the new owner unless they try to run cheap low octane gas, Then it will be a big problem. Same could be said for cams, or even a hot tune.

Sure you can find out all of this on your own but it will require some tear down depending on what flavor of motor we are talking about.

I'm a little bit surprised that people find this odd. If I had a buyer call me about a bike,or a car,or a boat that I had owned I would not be offended. I would tell them all I know about the machine, and any problems I had with it and wish them good luck.

And on that note, Good Luck.
