First is intuition and road signs , when they fail me I look at where the sun is....when that fails me I pull over and look at a map.
Taping directions to the tank is a favorite method too.
I use the basic geography I learned in grade school, coupled with a HOG Tour Guide in the tourpack when a little more detail is required. If I need more detail than the maps in the Tour Guide provide then I'm flying by the seat of my pants.
