Just put new rubber on the back wheel, and ring re-assembly I notice that the axle adjusters are nearly all the way out.The service manual tells me that the belt does'nt stretch much after the firs 500 miles. It is visibly in great condition...no cracks, chips, dry rot, etc etc, but the bike has nearly 10,000 miles on it. I was wondering if anybody knows the life expectancy of these things, or has any input regarding this. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I had over 40,000 miles on my 04 Ultra and the belt looked like new. I have a friend that has a Sporty 1200 and needs a new belt every spring. I can't tell you why the diff.
If that needs a new belt every spring, something is wrong with the adjustments. Id be Pi$$ed if I had to put a new belt on every 10,000 miles let alone every spring
I've put over 100,000 miles on rear belt. It came off an 85 FXRS and I put it on my E84 FXRP after I converted from a rear chain to a belt with awet primary. Never had a problem with it.
Do you have the right amount of play on the belt? Or is it really tight?
I had 1 belt quit at 40K. The next belt went at 13K. The 13K belt sat many years. I think time got it, not miles. I taded in one with 45K on the original belt with 45K, and going strong. They stretch a little when new, and that is about it. When replacing tires, you might snug it up a little. Not much. Belts are wonderful things. Forget about them till they quit. Then fix them.

Thanks for your input..... all of you guys. The tension of the belt is correct, just that the axle isalmost completely to the end of adjustment. The belt LOOKS brand new, so in light of what you guys told me, I should be fine. Thanks again.

I agree with you on that one vulhalla.....the rear wheel must be out of alignment to eat up a belt every year.
