I have an 08' XL1200N. I have a question about the engine light. When getting ready to start the bike, I do the normal firing procdure. I let the engine light turn off before starting. I have noticed though that after the engine light goes off, about 5 seconds later the engine light comes back on for about 10-15 seconds and turns back off. This happens whether it is running or not. Everything seems to be running fine and no trouble has evolved. I'm just curious as to why it's doing that. Has anybody out there seen or heard about something like this?
I have an '08 Dyna and something similar happens from time to time. It happens not only when I start it at times, but sometimes while I'm at a stop light, and my bikes runs funny when it does. Kind of like it's bogging down. It usually goes away after a few seconds. I haven't been able to figure out why it's happening though. Someone told me it the codes need to be reset. Done that but it's still happening. I'm going to follow this thread and hopefully someone will come up with a solution.
When the computer detects a problem, it notifies the rider by using the engine light. It could be an historical code, meaning that some problem occurred in the past, OR it could still be an existing problem.
Check your service manual for retrieving codes. There's a list of code descriptions in the manual also...
On my '99, it's as easy as turning the ignition switch on and wait till one second after the fuel pump stops, turn it off and wait one second then turn it on again. In short, you turn the ignition on and off in this manner three times. The third time you press the odometer button just before you turn it on and hold the odo button and you leave the ignition switch on. Then you count the number of flashes that the engine light goes through. It's a lengthy explanation after that, to describe the sequence the engine light goes through, so that is where your service manual is necessary.
On my '99, the codes reside in history until the ignition has been turned off and back on 50 times I think. And only then if the problem no longer exists. You can't 'reset' the code that I know of. As long as the problem exists, the engine light will continue to alert the rider.
