Default Safety question

Hey guys, quick tire question. Going to look at an older bike that's been stored in heated garage all it's life. Tires are well over ten years old, but low miles on them. Assuming they look good ( no cupping, dry rot, cracks, etc.) should I still replace them? What about the wheel bearings? Bike has been ridden about 100 miles/year since 2003, just to keep things moving. Bike is an older model from mid 90's. Thanks

I wouldn't bother with the bearings but the tires should be changed. I can't see riding at highway speed on 10 year old tires...pain hurts.

Your money, sure buy new tires. My money, as long as they look okay with no cracking I'm keeping them.

I'd ride them, but keep an eye on them. They may wear and deteriorate faster than you think.

Then they are well past their safe lifespan.

Use your head. They have lost significant grip and should be immediately replaced, along with tubes and rim strips. If you are so poor that you cannot afford to put this older bike in safe operating condition, don't buy it.

If you ordered a new set of tires and the ones that got delivered were new but were 10 years old, would you put them on your bike?

Have a look at the date stamp. There are 3 digits for the nineties (Δ,week and year) and 4 for 2000 and up (week and year both in two digits) 7 years would be my tipping point, no matter how good they look.

Has the oil been changed? Old oil gets acids in them that are corrosive.

I look at the Tire Identification Number (date stamp) for every tire I buy; cars, truck, tractors, horse trailer, flatbed trailer, motorcycle trailer, 4 wheeler and motorcycle. My limit is 5 years.
