I dont like consignment deals my self.Certain states have laws making this legal only if you sign the title over to the dealership. So they OWN the bike in a sense and you are basically at their mercy
I agree, it works that way with boats in several states, but you don't sign the title over until you're paid in full for the bike. I would never sign a title over until I have the money in hand, that would be foolish.
I sell my own but 10 percent is cheaper than i have heard of around here. You might negotiate a flat fee in advance if you think ten is too much.
Someone posted the dealer's insurance will cover your bike but I would check on that because I think it will be your insurance that will be responsible.
i can deal with idiots calling and coming and low balling for a weeks worth of wages myself. So unless this is a $4000 sporty then I would handle the deal myself when convenient to me.
Percent of sale is kinda of an open ended question since it depends on item being sold.
$4000 bike $400 sounds about right.
$10,000 bike a $1000 is kinda hummmm.
$15,000 bike $1,500 kinda makes me cough.
I knew an individual that needed to sell a harley raked chopper.
I rode it once and it was a flopper and in my opinion the individual that added the parts used high end parts but poor workmanship.
He tried the magazines, newspapers etc. for a few months and nothing so he finally took it to a consignment shop and had to pay about $1,500 when it was done to sell it.
It sold in about 4 weeks but had to pay about another $300 on top of the commission to resolve some buyer complaints.
So it depends.

I'm with dickey 10% seems high, especially on a bike over $10K. And as a buyer I'd far prefer to buy it from you than some independent shop.
Some may agree with you, but it all depends. I sold a car on consignment a few years back. The shop was able to arrange financing and a warranty for the guy that bought the car, things I couldn't have done. It was a one-stop deal for him. Maybe he could've gotten all that on his own, but the convenience helped seal the deal. The commission structure was different....medium flat fee and then a percentage over what my bottom line was. That motivated him to get a better price for me.
