In the State of Montana:
House Bill 534(Mandatory Helmet Law)went down in flames yesterday with a 15-2 vote. Many Harley riders showed up and voiced their concerns about choice and freedom, and that is was swayed the vote!
I am a new Harley rider, having just bought a XL883. I probably won't fit in very well with the Harley riders, but I feel a debt of gratitude for their action on this issue.
I use a helmet when I go for a ride, but when I putt around town on short low speed runs, I like to go with out. But thats my choice and I like the FREEDOM to make that choice. So after work today I will tip back a couple cold ones and give a toast to all Harley riders everywhere!...........meathead.
I am proud for the victory for freedom. I never ride without a helmet but I do not feel that the state should make the decision for me. I have a strange brain. As long as seat belt use was voluntary I wore one religiously. However, when it became compulsary, I found myself neglecting to put it on. And to be totally honest it is not a conscience decision. I just forget about it.

You might want to consider the well-being of your passengers when you have them. In alot of collisions, especially roll over types, your unrestrained body can become a rather large canon ball careening around in that small space perhaps decapitating some one you might even love!!

I don't know why you feel you wouldn't fit in with Harley riders - you are one!
But, I think that's great step for Montana, and hopefully it will send a message to other states as well. I also wear a helmet when I ride even though we do not have a manditory helmet law here in Illinois.
MeatHead,If you want to fit in,you will do just fine, just don't fret it.Like you in 1975 I joined United Bikers of Maine just to fight our Helmet law,and with a show of force we had ours repealed.Enjoy your Harley you are one of us.Dog

Rock on for Montana. Coming from Pennsylvania we haven't had a helmet law for a few years but I still choose to wear one, notice I said choose. And the statement about not fitting in Meathead, just remember everybody on here at one time bought or obtained their first Harley also.
