Guys I ppreciate all the information. Being new to the Harley world I just want to amke sure I keep mine running properly and not cook the engine. Just mounted a GPS with live traffic updates and I try and stay away from the high traffic jam areas. Isnt hard to find them during go home traffic in northern VA....
225 isn't bad. How I can tell if the bike is really getting hot is I get a strong smell of gear oil from the vapors coming out of the trans. I usually notice it at a fuel stop or sitting in heavy traffic on a really hot day.
You guys are awesome on here and thanks for all the advice. I have noticed the gear oil smell before as well. We were on a ride and got stopped in traffic on some back roads. I was around the 300 degree mark and the bike started running poorly. We stopped and gave them a break for a while. That was the first time I have ever had it get that hot and I was a little worried but all went well. I only run Amsoil full synthetic in the bike and change around every 4,000 miles. Most people say you are goot till around 5,000 but why chance it.....

I run Mobil one V-Twin syn, But rarely get 4,000 miles on it. I do keep track of milage but also I change the oil in the spring (regardless of how many miles are on it) AND if I went to a Bikeweek or weekend run some place where I was sitting in heavy traffic with the motor cooking for extended periods of time. Being an air cooled engine, I try to keep clean fresh oil in it. That's just me.
Since I added my GPS I dont have to much problem with traffic. Before the GPS there were somedays I would be in traffic for upto 1 1/2 hours. When my bike starts hitting the 250+ range I watch it. Especially if it gets around the 275 range I start shutting it down to cool off. I can sit and wait a little while, no issues with that!!!
