I live in a civilized part of a Cleveland suburb and I try to respect those around me. If I'm leaving early I roll the bike to the end of my driveway, start it and roll right away slowly. A lot of extra noise doesn't mean a lot of extra power, you can be reasonable with your exhaust choice, and it's easier on you and your ears. A not so wide opened exhaust can be more fun with the extra torque.
In the world of tweets and IM's I don't think this stuff is important to anybody (just read around this forum), but it sure would look bad on a job application.
I need to find a way to temporarily making my bike quit...
Not sure what kind of bike you have, but most of them have a kill switch. Once you're ready to start it again just run through normal operating procedures and off you go. No need to thank me now, just consider this a favor that I may collect on in the future.

**** on the neighbors. I have learned that neighbors (at least here in Florida) are inconsiderate bastards for the most part, so I ain't gonna worry about their peace & quiet, as they don't seem to care about mine.
In your case...idle it & quietly leave the 'hood slowly. Don't worry about steel wool.
