Way back about 1948 or so my dad had a Harley "74". He and most of his buddies ran straight pipes and some, like my dad bought a pair of large cow bells and modified them to fit on the end of the pipes. Dad got a ticket one day so he cut a piece of metal to just fit inside the end of the cow bell and drilled holes through it. Fashioned a rod to it and used a choke cable from the handlebars to open and close the butterfly (what he called it). He could quiet the pipes anytime it was necessary and then open them up when he hit the highway.
