Yeah a blowout at 70 would suck hairy *****. It would definately leave a brown stain in my shorts. Good on your buddy for keeping on 2 wheels.

If you see sparks when you stop its time to change em. I usually wait till the rear is worn down to second rubber. Worn a few to the steel though. I like to get my money's worth.

Regardless of miles or appearence, tires should be changed when they are 7 years old, especially if you're riding in hotter climates or freeway speeds.

I replaced the tires on an '03 last spring with less than 300 miles on them due to their age.

I change them before they blow out, but not before I'm done with them, I recommend you do the same.

Don't blame me if you wait too long or spend too early....

I replace my rear every 6-9k. Front still looks good with 17k. I am going to replace both at next service. If you ride in rain, you don't want to be anywhere near the wear bars.

If you've ever had a rear tire go down at speed, you'd never want it to happen again.

No ****. I accidentally let my front get down too far and had to emergency stop in rain.

I'll just say, you know *real* quick when that front tire has locked. Mostly because your pants get about 5 pounds heavier.

The next day I took the bike in and got the tires changed out. My dealer is always reaming my *** about the condition of my tires because they're worn.

After 15,000 miles, the rear was about 2/3 to the wear bar and the front was cupping and I could feel it chatter through turns.

I refuse to skimp on or get every last mile out of my tires. That little contact patch on the road is too important.

I put new ones on last week and will probably replace them again at the 30k mark. Or sooner if these don't wear like the last ones.

Was rolling about 65-70 on Mopac 1 in Austin weekend before last.
I don't recall hitting anything at all. But the rear tire went flat all of a sudden.
Bike got very very "wavy".. I got it slowed down and pulled over on the shoulder.

Realized I was about a half mile from Pep Boys. Limped it there, found the gash in the tire. It was about 4:00, and the HD shop there closed at 5. I bought some plugs and got it to hold air with 3 plugs in the hole. Filled it up with air, and headed to HD. (no other bike shops any closer, that had a tire)
About a mile or two from HD, it went flat AGAIN...
I limped it to the shop, arrived at 4:40... They stayed until 5:45 replacing that tire.. Good on them for doing it. Otherwise, I'd have been stuck in Austin until Monday..

I'm afraid if I'd had to stay that long, the "Weird" in Austin might have rubbed off on me.

When it went flat almost to HD, I had a buddy riding behind me to the left, watching tire to assure it wasn't ever disintegrating.. That would have been bad..
