I've only seen it on TV but it looks like a nightmare.
I really haven't parked my bike in too many public places but when I have, it's always away from everyone. I did park in front of a Hooters but they have a spot marked for bikes. Other than that, I try to park where I can see it.
And asking the owner to move it and let you out? If they get pissy, just tell them "That's OK, I'll get it." I've done that before, they were more than happy to do it themselves...

Sometimes you have to back in or out leaning at an angle to fit. Especially on weekend afternoons.

I had that happen to me at the dealership. I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt, but I wasn't overly concerned if my highway peg took of some of his paint in the way out.
