Default Weight of Harley on Trailer??

I know I will take a raft of **** about this, but I am wondering what a Harley on a trailer weighs. Said another way, how much towing capacity do I need in a car to be able to pull a Harley on a trailer?

I have never trailered a bike but I am in the market for a new car and want to allow for the possibility in case I ever want to take my bike someplace where I don't want to ride the entire way because of the weather, time of year or just because Kansas and Nebraska are so damned boring.

I don't need a big vehicle for other reasons (kids are grown and gone) and am wondering if the small crossover SUV's (a RAV4 for example) could reasonably pull my Road King on a trailer.

Any advice?

Depends on the trailer. I have a very lightweight Continental which is aluminum and my Grand Prix pulls it easily. The bike weighs less than a thousand pounds. Many trailers weigh considerably more, especially if they are enclosed.

Hmmmm.....

Weight of trailer + weight of bike = your answer.

You couldn't figure this out?

Depends on what SUV you get.
The Rav4 has a towing compacity of 1,500 pounds which doesn't leave allot when you consider your bike weights close to 1,000 pounds.

The Kia Sorento V6 model for example can tow 3,500 pounds which leaves you 2000 pounds for a trailer.
Also depends if you get an enclosed or open trailer.

Thanks for a useful answer. To the others, yes, I can add. But I have no idea what a reasonable trailer weighs and if the weight of the trailer is what is important or if it is the "tongue weight" (that I have seen referred to) that is important.

As you can probably tell, I have NO trailering experience. This new interest is prompted by the fact that my son and daughter-in-law are about to move to California. I'm not sure that I want to ride that far over the flat and (to me featureless) states in the middle and I'm damned sure my wife wouldn't go that far 2-up. But I'd like to ride in California when I get there.

I am thinking about an open (not enclosed) trailer and would try to get the lightest one that could be trusted with my bike.

Any advice on a trailer meeting that description?

Well this little baby only weighs 675 pounds and should haul your bike easily.
That's only 1,700 pounds together.

You will have no problem towing it with a SUV with a V6 engine.

Make sure you practice allot with the trailer before you strap your bike to it.

Good luck.

Don't forget where you are towing. Mountains, hills and wind can strain a vehicle. More heat and wear if not adequately equipped for the task. Transmissions and overheating plus braking. You need to pull it and stop it.
