I recently bought an 09 heritage softail classic and I want to change the primary oil. Any suggestions on which oil to use and exactly how much I need to add? I am new to the biking world, so I could use some suggestions! Thanks guys!
Make sure you remove the derby cover before you drain the oil out. It takes a 27 mm torx, a lot of people strip the screws removing them.
I use HD formula plus which work fine for me, the amount need is in your manual.
Here's a can of worms being opened. I would use whatever synthetic you like and 2 quarts is more than enough. Should come up to just shy of the bottom of derby cover (removed). I am basing that off my TC88 so owners manual will give more info.
The '09 takes 38 ounces of oil in the primary. Earlier years take 32 ounces. Check your manual to be sure on the amount. I forget what year they changed, but I do know my '09 RK takes 38 ounces.
I use Shell Rotella T 15W-40 in the primary. Just regular motor oil is fine for the primary, synthetic is not necessary.
