I think that's the key. They've already done it and knew it would work. If you were using a different cam than what they recommended you would have needed to check it with clay. As you said, probably should have anyways, but it started and didn't blow up, so I guess you're good.

Just an update for anybody who cares.

I now have just over 3000 miles on the bike since the dyno tune and have to say this combination has worked out very well, bike is very street able and has noticeably way more power from idle up, plus a very smooth power curve.

I was worried the cams might be a bit much for street usage, but they have worked out even better than I hoped for.

Bike runs good in the 50-98 degree weather I've encountered, and is definitely more fun when the throttle is twisted.

Would I do this again?
You bet!

Only thing I need to install is the variable clutch, like on the dyno, I get a bit of slippage under full throttle.
Clutch is on the bench, just waiting for a rainy day to install it.

I should be good for awhile now, although Jamie at Fairbault HD has said a 120+ hp version would be easily obtained..hummmm

Anyway, it's worked out well and anybody thinking of stepping up a 103 motor might give this combination a look.

3000 miles? Damn, I need to retire so I can ride more. I think I've got just over 2000 on mine this year. Should be adding about 1500 or more in the next week though.

Glad to hear you're happy with the money you spent. I'm still happy with mine.

Ya, been riding a bit

You get back stop down, we'll put the clutch in and I'll buy at Shamrocks.

Have fun at Sturgis.

Hey AllenW, glad to hear the bike is running so well!

I looked through this thread again, did you try installing the Barnett HD or SE clutch spring - I was thinking that would be enough when I do my build.

Also, what compression did they set those heads up at for the 590s?

35 years of HVAC and pipe fitting have left me with arthritis in my hands, not bad yet, but a stiffer spring was a little more than I wanted to deal with, but ya the spring would probably be enough.

I went with the Cometic thinner head gasket and best I can tell, went from about 9 to 1 to 9.5 to 1, half a point anyway.

Going to the higher compression 107 pistons gives you 10 to 1 or something like that, and a few more ponies, but with 3k on the motor I just couldn't justify it for what I'd get.

Well, I think your hands did a pretty good job on the build! I have the Barnett clutch spring and it is pretty stiff, I heard the SE version was easier.

You have the same stock engine I have(103), so we have a stock compression of 9.6 to 1 and I have read that the thinner head gasket only gives you a .2 bump - that would take you to 9.8 to 1. I would have guessed Revolution would have set the heads up to give you something closer to 10.5 to 1? Just curious, because the 590s are high on my list.

I totally get not going Big Bore on the 103". I am kinda leaning that way too, just going to check with my local indy(GMR) soon and see what they charge. You only get 3-4 inches but you do get forged pistons and they will have more options on setting the compression - well see, still doing my homework as you can tell.

Thanks for all the info!

You could be right on the compression ratio, I don't remember exact numbers and thought .5 was close, but .2 could be correct.
I'm thinking the gasket was .030 but may be wrong.

Wasn't much I know, but the cams seem quite happy with it as is.
More compression would give me a few more horses, but cost and original parts being so new I couldn't justify it, next time maybe.

Have fun and post how the build goes.

Al
