I posted a few weeks ago in one of the water-cooled threads, about how my 2012 FLHTK was pinging like crazy when I rode home from work - about 80 miles, in 110+ temperatures. At the time it worried me a lot, because it just didn't sound good and I wondered if it was doing damage. Well, today I was caught in the same situation. My dash thermometer was 2/3 of the way from 90 to 120, so 110 degrees or so for the long ride home. No pinging AT ALL. In fact, the bike was running exceptionally smoothly.
The ONLY difference - 3 weeks ago I was running on Arco gas, today I was running on Mobil. The local Mobil costs $.15-$.20 more per gallon, but I know what I will be using the rest of the summer.
I will run only Mobil or Shell, 93 octane in my bike. I have run Sunoco. The bike liked it but the cost was more. I was stuck running 91, in another state. Got some pinging, but not to bad.
I run chevron every time. When it was 112 here a few weeks ago. It ran just as good when it was spring. I got arco gas and my bike ran rough and didn't feel right to me at all.
It is my understanding (at least here in CAL) ARCO is the worst gas that can be bought, it is OK for older cars but most new cars will perform badly with it, so I do not put ARCO in my tanks - car, Truck or bike. I either use Chevron or Mobile as the bikes seems to run well with a tank from them 91 octane (CA).

I wonder why some 93 octane gas pings and some doesn't? Where I get gas, they have an option to add something while you're filling up but it cost a lot. I'd like to try it, since my bike sounds like a seeing machine at 40mph.
