I currently live in SC which does not have a helmet law (I will wear one anyway). But I am moving to NC next month and they require DOT approved helmets. Any ideas on a half helmet that doesn't give you the mushroom head look? I bought my bike yesterday and all the Harley helmets at the dealership give that affect and all the reviews on the ones online say the same thing. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist? Help me out...
There are no DOT rated helmets half helmets that will not give you mushroom head.
Anyone who claims otherwise is either lying or is not selling a DOT helmet.
The interior closed cell foam on all DOT helmets must meet a minimum thickness according to the DOT spec and that's what gives any helmet that meets the spec the mushroom effect.
That being said, you have 2 options. Either get a non DOT helmet, put a DOT sticker on it and hope for the best -OR- buy a DOT helmet and live with the mushroom effect.
A compromise many have made might be to buy a 3/4 DOT helmet - since the head is enclosed, the mushroom effect is minimized.
Good luck and remember, all DOT half helmets will give you the mushroom head look without exception.

This is true to an extent...if your comparing to "beanie" lids. The Bell Pit Boss uses a different internal suspension that minimizes the mushroom look. I looked hard to find something that won't make me look like a Mario Cart driver and the Pit Boss is as close as it gets.

I agree. And further to all of that, if you're going to wear a helmet I would suggest considering one that offers decent protection rather than worrying about "mushroom head"....seriously, only HD riders seem to be worried about this "phenomenon". LOL.
take a look at a Bell Rogue; it's very different looking and though I'm not sure about the muzzle, the rest of the helmet looks good IMO.
