The f**k they do- I can't tell you the hundreds of substandard parts that are scrapped and replaced with new contracts/vendors every year because they did not meet our specifications.
We won't put on one rivet if there's a question of the reliability- 300-400 lives per flight depend on us from engineers to mechanic.
I know the same specification and quality demand exists for Harley Davidson. Almost all of the assembler/installers at HD ride what they build.
If you don't like the workmanship, build your own.
Really......Perhaps you need to catch a clue on what goes on "upstairs" Boeing sends out bids like everyone else. They may not like certain critical parts and make them. But they outsouce a lot and accept bids. Their engine builders GE/Roll Royce do the same. That is the way business and the Military are run.
Harley just uses less expensive inferior parts to save a few dollars. Safety is not an issue. They are safe enough.
Let me put it this way. If Harley made an Airliner I would not fly in it. I would ride their bikes all day long though.
I understand "design life" and own Two Toyotas one has 85K and never had a repair issue. The other is an 08 with 33K miles becasue I ride a bike 90% of the time. The RAV goes through a QT every 1200 miles. That's the worst thing I can say about my wife's vehicle. We will buy another,
. Know why I buy them? Back in 90's or so I had a Tacoma truck with 92K well out of warranty years and miles and had this "miss" in the engine. Stopped at an auto repair shop, They told me I had head gasket leak. I decided to spend the extra $500 and get the $2000+ job done at the dealership.
The Dealership said there was a TSB out and Toyota had some bad Gasket material and was replacing ALL head gaskets free on any vehicle up to 120K made within the run. Not a "safety" issue. A reliability issue. This is what a "premium" manufacture does to create a premium brand. Had a timing belt and water pump replaced while they had it apart. Thats what Toyota did. If they could get a part to last long for another nickle they would SPEND the nickle and charge more for the product. They BUILT reliability into the vehicles and charhed more for them. US auto makers did not understand why people would pay more for a Toyota than a Chevy after awhile to this day..in fact
I own Toyotas myself and am fairly brand agnostic. I just drive whatever I like and have driven most brands. Toyota's quality in my experience has degraded since around '07 in the same way you are describing Harley has. Guess what, something tells me there are the same economic decisions taking place behind the scenes. It's not much of a mystery, any company is going to try and maximize profits. Even if it means "riding a reputation" for a while. But to come in here and point and laugh at people defending Harley and do the same thing yourself about Toyota is laughable.
Hmmmm, the OP has a little over 100 posts.......did any of them contribute anything to this forum? I like Harleys, all of them....thats why I come here. Why is he here?
Honda makes great bikes such as the vtx 1800 and gold wing. You might want to check them out as you can find a used one really cheap with the Honda reputation for reliability.
I can attest to this statement. While I do have an Ultra Classic that I really love to ride, my other bike is a Honda VTX1800. In less than 4 years I have put nearly 50,000 miles on it without one problem. That bike is truly bullet proof. I hope I can get the same reliability out of my HD.

Yes really they do what I said- 5 years in structures engineering and 17 years in assembly/installation from nose to tail in the 777/767/787.
Safety is always an issue in all components whether they're flying at 35,000 feet or 3 feet off the ground on two wheels.
I look for the same workmanship in my Harleys like on my planes..I haven't been disappointed.
Just keep driving your import cars and bikes-don't bother with HD- you're far too superior in intelligence to ride one.
I can ride a Harley again because I don't put the miles on I used to since moving east. Want a Road King Custom 02-07 That is the only HD the works for me.
Had a lot of bikes over the years from KZ550- GL1000 FXRC, CB900C, FJR1300, VT1100, Yamaha 1300 now. ..Depending on where I live I bought the bike for the area. Out West it was the FJR and VT1100s after the HD was sold. Moved east bought the 1300.
