Doing my western travel vacation and in Colorado Springs rt now. Going to Canon City tomorrow morning to do some rafting. In the afternoon I'll head west towards Utah on Rt 50. I was wondering when I cross Rt 550, how far south wouldI have to travel to hit some good sights on the Mill Dollar road. If its not too far, I'd like to see some of it but cant go too far south. Thanks
Hwy 50 takes you into Montrose Colorado. From Canyon City your looking at three hours to Montrose. From Montrose to Ouray on hwy 550 its about 30 to 40 minutes. South of there to Silverton call it an hour if you stop along the way and enjoy. I would strongly recommend to at least ride to Silverton on 550 since your this close. Trust me you will be back on here after thanking me. There is just not too many roads like this in the country.
Ouray to Silverton is what some consider the true Million Dollar highway segment and in my opinion the best part. About an hour from Ouray to Silverton and worth the drive but then you have the hour+ to get to Montrose and highway 50. If you have enough time you are going to drive right by Black Canyon of the Gunnison going to Montrose, worth at least a drive through the park to see some spectacular scenery if the 550 trip is to much. Enjoy

I/we did that trip a few years ago while hunting mulies out of Montrose. We harvested them early in our trip and decided to take that ride. Glad we did, it was some thing to see!
We did the Million Dollar Hwy last year at the end of May. Wow. Absolutely one of the best roads I've ridden. Do yourself a favor and do it while your this close!
Check first to see if the chip and seal paving operation is finished. They were doing that when I was out there a month ago near Ouray. Makes a mess. And chips can stick in your final drive belt making holes in it.
We were there 2 weeks ago. The highway work is done. Road is smooth as a baby's rear end. There is even a little shoulder on most of it now. Guard rails are still scarce.
Do it! You won't regret it at all.
