I have a 2003 Road King Classic 100th Anniversary. After I start the bike, the engine light comes on momentarily and then goes out. Anyone knows what's causing that? How can I take care of it?
Does it come on when you turn the key on and then turn off about 6 seconds later or is it off when you start it, then comes on and goes back off? If it comes on when you turn the key on and goes out about 6 seconds later and doesn't come back on, its supposed to do that.
Mine does what bdtayor said. And I asked the same question, why/what was it doing. I was told the computer is checking the engine specs. As long as it comes on and then goes off, I'm okay.
Light should come on as the bike goes through it's checks. If your one of those people that flips the key switch on then hits the starter button immediately. Your beating the ecm through the checks. If you wait and the light cycles in then out before starting. It is doing it's stuff.
Engine light comes on when you turn the ignition switch to on position. Then once the engine is started, it stays on for 4 seconds, then goes out. If after another few seconds it comes back on, and stays lit for about 4 seconds, that is the indicator telling the operator that there may be a diagnostic trouble code present.
It may be an historic code, meaning that it had a problem that no longer exists, but is still in memory. Or, it could be a present code with an existing problem. If it is an historic code, the light will cease showing after 50 on/off cycles.
