Have you ever been to DC and driven around the various ghetto's. The demographic is definitely not a good representation of the U.S. It's not the Congressman or government workers that are killing each other there. Although we could certainly do with less of them all.
Yes, I have been to Washington, DC. With all due respect, do you have a clue about the rest of the country? Here it is...stats for 2011:
Our lawmakers could worry about a lot more relevant things than whether or not we wear a helmet (I always do, btw, but that's a personal choice). Even our safe Midwest "St. Paul" has a murder rate of 2.8 per 100,000, well above our motorcycle fatalities. Minneapolis, right across the river, is 8.3 .

Perhaps I'm missing your point, but what do the helmet laws have to do with the murder rates in the U.S.
I'll be blunt, if the people that live in DC want to keep killing themselves it really doesn't bother me. I've spent over 20 years mopping up the low lifes in various ghettos and have little to no respect for any of them. I admit to being jaded and cycnical, but I beleive I definitely have a clue about what goes on in most inner city ghetto's. I'm just lucky to have made it this far with my own life intact.
Yes there was that increase. What they did not say is that there was a 300 % increase in registered bikes. Those were the glory years of bike sales. I think it was 07 when HD sold 440,000 bikes.

I think it would be interesting to look at the study, not a summary published in an article. I realize motorcycle ownership is up (economical, fun transportation). But, so is distracted and insufficiently trained driving and riding.
Do the statictics included include on and off-road cycles and atv's? Does it include licensed and un-licensed operators and does it riders. This is important and might be further explored by grinding the numbers to injuries or fatalities per accident on and off road and then determine the cause of accident (roadway obstruction (animal, rock, other), run off the road, multi vehicle accident, tire/mechaincal failure, or ?) .
Granted, accidents are up, yet determining the source and potential solutions is in order.
Training, non-impaired riding, op awareness, helmet use, bright colors, lights, etc. are a start.
