I have a 1997 FXDS with Screaming Eagle stage I mods........I just put a supertrapp 2:1 on it, and I'm wondering where I should start with regard to the number of disks to add??? It's still 80", and I would like a nice mix of low and high end power and an exhaust note that sounds good, but not crazy loud. Please send me your suggestions.
Congrats on the Supertrapp - I think it is one of the best pipes out there for performance. IMHO I would start with all the discs that came with the pipe - 18 or 20 I think. Supertrapps never sound crazy loud even with the open end cap and 20 discs. I am running 30 discs and no one has ever said that my bike is obnoxious noise wise. I ride with a bunch of old guys that don't want to make a big racket and they have complained about some of my other pipe choices such as D&D and Bassani Road Rage. Even the wife likes the Supertrapp. YMMV.
I really like my Screamin Eagle Fatshotz slip ons. I am using 10 discs with an open end cap. I am still using the stock header with the cat still in it, for now.
It's official.....just loaded the holes with anti-seize and put on 20 disks.........wiped all the finger prints off the new chrome and with any luck, I'll be able to fire it up tomorrow after work and see how she sounds........I can't wait for tomorrow evening!
Smart man to use lots of anti seize. I put some on mine when I put it together, but not enough apparently. I took it apart to add an open end cap after riding it for 2000 miles and it was a b*tch! Really had to take my time and use a ton of penetrating oil. Eventually got them all out but when I reassembled, I used a ton of anti-seize.
I started with 20 discs and the closed end cap. Waaaaaaay quieter than my D&D Fatcat 2/1. Felt it choked off the motor a bit at higher RPMs. MKGuitar told me about the SnufRnot so I added one -
Pretty slick. Closed it's quiet as a church mouse. Open, sounds just right and runs more like it should. My guess equivalent to 30 discs when added to my 20 disc set up. Supposedly an open cap = 10 discs.

Run it with the 20 discs for a couple hundred miles then check your plugs to see what color they are. I could tell what I needed to do disc wise by how she ran, but definitely confirmed the mixture by checking the plugs. I agree the supertrapp is an awesome performing exhaust but it lacks in sound IMO.
You might find the following dyno tests on the Supertrapp with various quantities disks helpful.
The testing of different pipes was all done with the same bike and dyno.

Fired up the bike this evening, and it was very quiet......still rumbles and loupes along, but at about 60% of the volume. I put about 20 miles on, and by the time I got home, the volume had increased slightly. The BIG difference though is in the low-end power!!!! The bike came with open drag pipes with torque cones (at the cylinder)......the bike practically jumps out from under me when I take off from a stop now.........quite amazing really. I used 20 disks and the closed end cap (no decal popping either).....I think I'm going to like this! After another 80-100 miles, I'm going to checking the plugs to see if they are fouling............all in all, I'm thrilled!
