So if you carry ties for when your spring breaks how are you going to hold the bike up and put a tie on it to hold the stand up at the same time? Better yet how are you going to put the stand down with it tied up when you are by yourself?

two things, if the spring is loose enough that you could stretch it far enough with vice grips, then it is time to replace it.

secondly, dont kill yourself trying to install it that way. take off the top nut and the lock tab on the kickstand, swing the kickstand all the way forward, remove and reinstall new spring, swing kickstand back into place, re-install locking tab and tighten nut to spec. obviously the bike is gonna have to be either in a wheel chock, or someone holding the bike up for you. but it only takes about 3 minutes and no sweat or popping yourself in the nose involved.

easier and cheaper to carry a spare spring. if you use it, just buy another spring next time you are in the dealer and keep it for next time. they're only about $5.00. i had a spring that i was carrying in my bag for about 3 years. finally used it recently. thanks for reminding me that i need to buy a replacement for it.
