Default Kickstand spring WTF

I have a 95 sportster and yesterday the kickstand spring fell off. I put it back on and today leaving work it fell of again. I am not sure if there is a trick to keep it on there or if a spring would wear out in about a year. If the spring wears out that fast is there someone besides the HDstore I can get a spring that might last more than a year?

You probably over-stretched it putting it on. I read about a method on here that involved inserting pennies in between each coil to stretch evenly and then removing them after it's on.

Just a guess...

It is possible it is overstreched now but I feel it would have done that from just having the bike sit on the kick stand. I didn't have to stretch it out much at all to get it on. It stretches out a lot more when the kickstand is extended out then what I stretched it putting it on. Now I can put it on without using a tool. My kickstand has some play in it and I wonder if that is what's helping it fall off. If I extend my kickstand out it can move up and down quite a bit so I wonder if while I'm riding if it isn't bouncing making the spring too loose. Even when the spring was new it didn't pull the kickstand all the way back to the stopper.

That is possible. It looked correct but of course I didn't measure it and didn't have the original stock spring since the person that had the bike before me just used a door spring.
