Exclamation Manual compression release question

Ready to build my 107 in a few weeks, also putting a set of compression release. What brand do you recommend? Does it really matter? I see some of them have plastic caps, are they going to melt? Thanks! Alex

Mine have plastic caps and have not melted. I'm not sure what brand they are.

Nope they will not melt. Any brand will work fine. It is a little learning curve using them. You have to remember to open them every, and I mean every time before you try and start the bike. Failure to do so will wear out your starter and quick.

I had the manual releases on my 110 and was about to switch them to the automatic but someone wanted to buy the bike as it was.

Does it mean the one with plastic cap is more practical when engine is hot? Fried fingers!

You're not going to grab them, you're just going to push them down, quick. I've never been burned by mine.

Push down start, pop up automatically if I got that right.

Thank you!

I have the plastic caps. They will not melt. You'll definitely notice how much easier it is on the starter when you install and use them prior to starting.

Default Compression Releases

Those EBay releases are a lot better looking than the HD ones and half the price.
I've had mine on the bike for about 4 years now without problems. Once in a while one of them will hang in the open position when the motor is hot and I start it. I just rev the motor a bit and it will close. I obviously need to pull them out and lube them up.
I don't usually forget to open them when I start the bike but if I do the starter really drags turning over the motor.
The plastic caps won't melt.

Had 2 sets of the HD ones; they had a tendency to pop closed as soon as the motor started to turn, so I took one apart...they use a circular spring clip on the outside of three detent *****; the spring clip can rotate and one of the ball bearings will hang up in the gap, leaving only two to hold it "in" ... I know what this must sound like to SOME of you, but anyway, I went with aftermarket releases (Headquarters supplied) for the same thread and they worked fine.

BTW; on my next build this winter I'm going to use S&S E-Z start cams...similar technology has been around on Yamaha's and V-Rods for years...

Get in the habit of engaging them every time. I don't even think about it anymore, just turn the ignition, hit the MCRs, press start button.

The plastic capped ones are probably a good idea. The metal ones get hot pretty fast.
