You could give one to the guy in this video. His doesn't work that well.

I'm not asking for recommendations for the new helmets (plenty of those posted already in other threads, plus I've already got a short list). However, I am curious as to what others do with the old helmets -- toss them in the trash? give them to someone you don't really care about? sell on Craigslist?
Those recommended replacement periods differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Bell 3, Shoei 5, Shuberth 5-7 just for some examples.

I have and wear helmets 10, 15 years old. I change my oil when needed, all the other necessary maintenance and ride too much to let tires get outdated. Helmet longevity is pretty low on my priority list.

I doubt that any of them would burst into flames if not replaced in some timely manner... <g>

However, I do think it's reasonable to replace one that's 5-6 yrs old if for no other reason than the known processes degrading the shell and liner. My past discards have always ended up in the trash bin.

After all, as has been pointed out in numerous helmet threads here, it's my head that I'm protecting -- and after totalling two bikes (and walking away each time IMO because I was wearing a good helmet) I'm a bit cautious.

I have never thrown one away. I never bought a new one because it was 5 yars old. I had to buy a new one because somebody stole mine with me standing 50' away. I'm sure its hanging on some kids wall.
I also wouldnt loan a friend a helmet I wouldnt wear.

Stack them in a closet... I don't think I believe that 5 years and a helmet goes bad... Like someone else said, it's not milk.
