I would deep six it - Why would I let someone wear a helmet that I wouldn't trust? And how would I feel if they needed the protection and were badly injured because it's structural integrity was compromised due to age.

I never really thought about it but I have replaced helmets when the foam gets funky from too much sweat. I don't get why someone would sell or donate a safety product they no longer believe to be safe.

However, I do think it's reasonable to replace one that's 5-6 yrs old if for no other reason than the known processes degrading the shell and liner. My past discards have always ended up in the trash bin.

After all, as has been pointed out in numerous helmet threads here, it's my head that I'm protecting -- and after totalling two bikes (and walking away each time IMO because I was wearing a good helmet) I'm a bit cautious.
Yes, I was only pointing out that there is no 5 year arbitrary replacement time frame, only recommendations. Unless you race with a sanctioning body that requires certain certifications that are current. I believe in choice, you want to get a new helmet or wear a 10 year old helmet, I respect your choice.

I generally keep mine about 7-10 years but I am always getting new ones I must have at least 10 helmets between 1 and 10 years old, after that I toss them.

I save mine for awhile just in case I would need it, but normally they go into the trash.

I give mine to the Fire and Ambulance Services to use for practice in removing helmets from injured riders.

I just do what the manufacturer recommends. They start to smell bad around that time anyway.

And, it's an excuse for a new helmet.

The old ones make nice flower pots.

I take a dump in them and hang them off the bars of Hondas.

Old helmets are all to be shipped to the Arizona desert, where they are placed into storage for use in the event of a national helmet emergency.
