I'm not asking for recommendations for the new helmets (plenty of those posted already in other threads, plus I've already got a short list). However, I am curious as to what others do with the old helmets -- toss them in the trash? give them to someone you don't really care about? sell on Craigslist?
Remove the protective foam and sell as a slim fitting novelty helmet to someone who as a larger head than you.

i was thinking of taking the soft foam out and cutting it down to a half helmet and putting the edge material back on, leaving the hard foam intacked.

We don't have to wear them here in IN.. But if I have an extra and someone wants one of my old ones, I give them away.

My previous helmet was an HJC. I sent them an email asking if they recycled them, they do, so I sent it back to them.

As was states earlier in the thread. If you want to give them away find a local EMT school or place that trains EMS people. In the 30 years I have in the business, there are never enough helmets to train the new folks on. Also, as helmets change, it is nice to see the different styles of helmets before you have to remove one from a downed rider.

Contact your local EMS or Fire station, they should be able to put you in touch with someone who can put them to good use.

Really, folks: do this - practice is essential for this to be done safely, and when did you last see an over-resourced fire/rescue service? I know that the opportunity to rehearse has saved lives during TT.
