Id like to upgrade my Carb on my EVO but not really sure which size is the best for me. 42mm or 45mm. Also not sure about the brand name? Mikuni, S&S or Edelbrock? And specific Jet to look for etc. Do any come pretty much tuned out of the box except for minor adjustments like Carbs for a car? Thanks.
I am a fan of the S&S Super E. I have one on my Evo. They come, as you say, pretty much set up and just require minor adjustments. Fairly easy install. Kit includes intake manifold, carb and air filter assembly. You will also need to change your carb cables. A nice Saturday project. You will feel impressive results if you are now running a stock carb. Also change your stock mufflers if you have not already. You need a free flowing exhaust to benefit from a free flowing intake.
When I did the motor work on my 87 which was over bore cam and some head work I took the carb and went with #180 main jet, #50 low speed jet drilled the vac.hole on the slide polished the slide and the throat were the slide runs and cut 3 coils off the slide spring.
It has run great don't have to use the enricher till it gets down to about 60 deg. and haven't fouled out a plug yet.
WOW, I guess im not a carb mechanic because the only part I really understood how to do was the jets. ANy special tools required? A write up I could fin that shows how to do this type of rebuild. PArts list and where to find the parts? Id love to not have to use the enrichner.
The only parts you would need to buy would be the jets. You really don't need to polish the slide I just sort of did it for the hell of it. Ill see if I can dig up some pic's of the rest for you.
Nothing to ever go wrong with this carburetor. I have had so much luck with these. I always got bettery fuel mileage and there are more adjustments on this carburetor.
I am not saying the CV is a bad carburetor, you can make these work well if tuned right. However, I believe the S&S will outperform the best tuned CV.
