I probably wouldn't clean mine as much but a lot of the roads I ride on aren't always paved. They could be gravel or oiled and rocked maybe even dirt. The road I live on is not maintained well and the bike gets dirty often, especially after a rain. It doesn't take much time to clean it. I can't imagine what it would look like if I let it go all year. Probably covered in oil and dust. Guess it wouldn't rust that way tho.....
I ride every day (my bike is my primary means of transport to and from work, running errands etc.) It gets washed about once a week or so (maybe every two if it isn't so grubby). I've used every method or system there is for doing it and I've settled on a pile of microfibre cloths and some Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax detail spray. The chrome gets a polish from time to time with Peek metal polish, but usually wiped over with the spray.
I've found detailing that way to be less effort than the traditional bucket method (rinse, wash, rinse, dry, wax if required). I might be getting too old for bending and washing and bending and washing. These days I can put the bike on the jack and shuffle round it with spray and cloth while sitting on a stool. Much more civilised, and as someone else said it give you a chance to look for things coming loose/flaking off/leaking etc that you might not otherwise notice.
