it's normal, "sewing machine-ish" valvetrain noise...
on my fiancee's Yamaha, You can hear the drive shaft squeak

Thanks guys. Like I said my first air-cooled motor and I thought it might be normal, its not really bugging me just wasn't real sure about what I was hearing. I noticed in 5th at around 3200 cruising I hear nothing but the rumble of the V&H Big Shots so I guess thats how she likes to be ridden. I just noticed that as she got hotter the noise became more pronounced, but with metal expansion and all with heat that makes sense. And yes shortfatboy it is "sewing machine-ish".

Ditto that: I just went from a 12" to an 8", and while the wind still goes over my head (so wind noise isn't the issue here), I hear less engine noise getting reflected back at me. I wouldn't have believed the difference if I hadn't experienced it first hand.
