Default servive manuals

After only being a member for a Month or so , I have a question for all . How many of you purchase a service manual when you buy any piece of machinery? . I see lots of posts here asking questions on how to fix, install, remove parts . I would never think of owning anything ,if i plan on doing my own work, without one. I would feel lost without one , just to check torque specs is reason enough. Mark..

I do. And I buy the MoCo Service Manual. Those Clymer and other knock-off manuals are garbage, IMHO.

I also buy the Parts Manual too. I can find what I'm looking for better than those "just a step above Wally World" parts people any day!

WhenI can I buy the oem parts and service books for all of my machinery. For example, my Kubota z turn 60" mower must have thousands of parts, and tons of seals and washers. I can't aford the time to go to the dealer, wait in line and then try and describe what partI need. Withthe books I get the correct size every time and have never been stuck with the wrong part. Believe me ,when you order the wrong electrical part they will not take it back....Mark...

I disagree with you on the Clymer comment.

I own both the Clymer and the HD for my 98 Dyna WG and I find that the Clymer contains more detailed instruction and more pictures for more procedures than the HD one does. The HD one seems vague sometimes.

But maybe things have changed with newer manuals.

I haven't thumbed a Clymer for HD since the early 80's and I thought it was crap. I recently bought one (huge mistake) for my 95 Chevy p/u, and it's worthless to me. I had better luck just using my mechanical (or lack thereof) prowess

Yep,

Manuals are well worth the price of admission.

For bikes, I have always gotten the 'real' service manual...For cars I just grab the Haynes (cheaper) from AutoZone or PepBoys.

I will agree that the HD Manual takes for granted that you have a certain level of mechanical expertise/knowledge.
Example: A buddy of mine picked-up a Road King and went to change the oil - drained the transmission fluid instead...No big deal...but he commented onhis HD manual not really specifying where theoildrain plug was...I told him where the correct plug was and looked in my manual a few days later...and it's not real clear.

How could somebody not get a manual when almost the most basic job they do themselves will more than save the cost of the manual????????[:-]

Ummmm...

There are a LOT of people who never intend to do the most basic job themselves.

They are just "get gas, go, get gas, go, get gas, go to the dealer, get gas, go, get gas, go to the dealer, get gas, go..."
