i don't mind a little cough and sneeze, mine was excessive, now its gone, i will trade a little sneeze for more fuel mileage, I'm sure my guy will get it close to where i want it. apparently the red needle uses more fuel than the blue.
Check your plugs. Sooted up - too damn rich. With the Yost tube, use the blue needle jet with 1 or 2 shim washers. 45/185 is good jetting for a TC88. Idle screw should be around 2 1/2 turns out. Spray Carb Cleaned into the idle transfer port - the small round holes lower left of the throttle bore. Be sure to check the packing on the idle mixture screw. This will effect your mpg. CV Performance has all the parts you may need, just do NOT use the CVP emulsion tube, IT SUCKS, stick with the Yost. rebuild kit and Idle screw packing should do it. I removed the EFI from my 07 FXDB and put on a CV 40. GREAT CARB and easy to tune yourself. I'm getting 42 cold mpg and 48/50 in hot weather.

Thanks that's what I wanted to hear.

Took it back he installed the blue needle , now I'm getting 33 1/2 mpg woo hoo big improvement. The bike definitely runs Better but damn I would rather have a little coughing and farting and get 40 mpg than none and get 33 mpg.
Try this- swap your factory emulsion tube back in, keep jetting the same & install the needle from the '88 XL, part #27094-88. Kutter's had 'em in stock a couple months ago.
I'm still getting the odd sneeze with my FXD, but is otherwise running great & got 47mpg today.
Some say those Yost Powertubes kill your MPG, but I got 52mpg on my '94 XL with one installed.
That said, my FXD had the same problem yours did. Put a '88 XL needle in it, left the stock 45/190 jets in it & tweaked the idle mixture. Runs great, warms up quick, great throttle response & 46mpg. Was getting 42mpg prior. Still had the odd sneeze, tho, so I wanna wait till it warms up outside before I decide whether or not to go up to a 46 pilot.
This has been the formula for quite a while. The 46 jet is hard to find, most go to a 48, don't go with the 48. You may even be able to go with a stock needle ands shim it.
sounds like pushing jet kits on every one that drops a bike in to him works for him as it does for a lot of them . they just want your money and a quick fiddle with a carb and 2 $5 jets and they can charge you $ 150 and up depends on how much of a sucker they take you for .
some people will mug you by sticking a gun in your face some with do it with a spanner a smile and a cup of coffee on the big leather sofa and ask you hows your wife and kids like they really give a **** . im not for dyno jet kits myself . do some research on it carb tuneing and all . I would ring the dude up and tell him about the mpg . most people would leave the bike stock if they taught it was going to drink fuel after a carb kit . maybe thats all a dresser will that at that kind of speed anyway do you ride it like you stole it on your way up to 75mph ?
You think that's all there is to it dealing with a carb knock yourself out , get busy and get a frustration education then come back and tell us how much you spent paying somebody to unscrew your bike
Rest of you guys a dyno isn't the end all everybody thinks it is and talk about overpaying for something ................

So twisted, Are you saying I should mess with the carb myself or should I keep taking it to my guy? Because I am leaning towards getting my old parts and whatever is left of my kit and jacking with it myself. I was an auto mechanic for 29 years and rebuilt plenty of carbs back in the day so I am capable . I just generally don't want to work on stuff any more.
