Does anyone know what the effect will be by raising the e clip on the needle which will lower the needle into the jet more? Trying to get back to an acceptable fuel mileage . 2004 electraglide Stock , went from low 40s to low 30 mpg after kit , blue needle 185 main 45 slow jet

Raising the clip/lowering the needle will lean out the midrange. Should help improve mileage as long as you don't have any hesitation in that range ( 1/4 to 3/4 throttle). If it hesitates or pops you've gone too lean.
That is what I am worried about , going too lean, will I know by the way it runs? Spark plugs don't read the way they did back in the day , used to be if the center porcelain was nice and tan you were good but not any more.
If you are using the 2 provided washers, just remove 1 of them before you change the e clip setting. Test ride it and watch the mpg. Are you using the blue needle valve? That one is for economy, the red is for power.

Yup...much harder to read plugs these days. If it gets too lean you'll feel it under acceleration. It will hesitate and miss. If your mileage is any indication, I'd say you probably have a way to go before you get into trouble.
I am using the blue needle with one washer , when the clip is on the "stock" position I get 30-33 mpg when I raise the clip one position mileage increases to about 45 . Just don't want to damage anything from being too lean.
I never have noticed plugs reading different than they always have. Got a bud with an '03 Wide Glide that regularly gets 55 mpg (highway) with great looking plugs.
Drop the clip and see how it runs. Check the plugs for color. You might even be able to go even leaner to help that mileage.
I think I want to put this carb back the way it was before the yost kit.
Can't learn anything without trying, but suit yourself. One notch on the needle will not hurt your motor if that's what's making you hesitate.
Good Luck.
So I took it back to my Indy and told him to put the carb back stock. He said ok but I'm going to do a mileage test first. So he calls me today and says he did the mileage rest and it got a little over 40 mpg. Still wanted it back stock. Here is a picture of the gas receipt he taped to my fairing. Unless my math is wrong that ain't 40.
