Just brought home a "new" Shovelhead
I had 2 (new) Shovelheads, '75 and a '76.
I ran 50wt most of the time, but I did use 60wt in the summer months.
Back in those days I only used Valvoline Racing oil.
Make sure you have a good battery with a good, full charge
As has already been mentioned, make sure that your petcock is turned on and that you have fuel in your main tank.
If you're low on fuel and you may want to turn the petcock to the "reserve" position.
Make sure your "kill" switch is in the "RUN" position.
On the first start in cool/cold weather, I'd give my bike two cranks on the throttle, spray a little squirt of starting spray in behind the air cleaner, pull the choke out and hit the starter button.
If it didn't fire up on the third revolution, I'd repeat the throttle and squirt process again.
One of mine only failed me once (in the spring) and that was my fault as I needed a new battery and failed to get one because I was anxious to get that first ride of the season.
