I apologize in advance if this has been discussed, I'm new to the forums and don't know, did a QUICK search and didn't come up with anything.......how many of you guys are HOG members? A buddy of mine told me to sign up, but from the website, its tough to see the value of it, other than a magazine, pin and patch, what else do you get? Is it worth it?
You can get better towing from your own insurance company or AAA. Last new bike I bought I asked specifically NOT to be signed up for HOG - I just throw that crap away anyway.
HOG membership can be fun can be a pain in the butt.National membership gets you the access to benefits. Local chapter get you to riding with people interested in riding. You will get out of it what you put in it. If you don't participate in any events go on club rides it will be no fun. If you do participate you might have some fun and meet some people that like to do the same kind of riding you like to. Yes some clubs do not have good members or dealers and are not fun. There are many clubs that are run well and get out and ride and have fun. You do need to try it for yourself it is not for everyone.
My wife and I have belonged to several chapters over the years some we did not stay with because there was to much drama. We have belonged to one for close to 20 years. We have friends all over the country have ridden to places we never would have all with HOG members. We have made life long friends because of HOG events. Not everyone has the same experiences you have to decide for yourself.
I just signed up for a year on a recommendation. I want to use it for the towing package, which will cost an additional $20 per year. I also heard the tour book is good. I'm not interested in joining the local HOG chapter.
There is the "basic" towing included at no extra fee. My wife's bike got towed once when we were traveling and it had a dead battery. Didn't cost us anything besides some time.
I too have no interest in joining the local chapter, even if it didn't cost more.
The mag is okay, or great if you like reading Harley ads thrown in with more Harley ads cleverly disguised as articles.
The atlas is pretty cool, but once you get one you should be good.
There is nothing wrong with it if you like the patches and stuff that they give out. If you like riding with them then that's great too.
I haven't even tried using any other discounts on other stuff. I'm trying to figure out how much towing/roadside assistance will cost to be added to my insurance. If it's cheaper then I will drop the HOG membership.
I like the magazine. Obviously, all local chapters are all different, so you may or may not like yours. I belong to two chapters and I see a big difference between them.
