Yes they are the BEST for IRL drivers, but doesn't mean that transitions to m/c's as well. Unless you plan to run 220+ MPH in circles, or 300+ MPH in 1/4 mile increments, the expense isn't necessary. That's why Bell makes a m/c line, but Simpson doesn't (can buy, bon not m/c specific). Looking at the m/c road racing scene you'll see Shoei, Arai, Shark, etc...for FF lids.

So, to answer your question, IRL drivers do invest in quality because it's part of their sport. It's the best for their line of work...JMO.

Used to be the specs for a motorcycle helmet and automobile helmet were different. Don't know if they still are but it had to do with roll cage contact and stuff like that. Refer to the helmet specs before purchasing.

Helmets are designed for their intended purpose. For example, better MC street helmets take into consideration the aerodynamics of the shape, the amount of "lift" at speed, vision restrictions, venting, etc. A auto racing helmet isn't as concerned with the aero of the helmet especially if it's designed for closed cars. Shell materials vary also. Some are carbon fiber. Some are fiberglass composites, and some cheap ones are plastic. Take a helmet like a Schuberth and the shell alone has about 5 layers of differing compounds. Then you get into the impact absorbing materials and then the padding. Naturally, you are going to pay a pretty stiff price for one of those. They start at about $500 and go up to over a grand for a motorcycle helmet.
