what actually causes death?
Was that info copy and pasted, or did you do that all on your on, ScooterGrrl?
44. Approximately 50% of the motorcycle riders in traffic were using safety helmets but only 40% of the accident-involved motorcycle riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
45. Voluntary safety helmet use by those accident-involved motorcycle riders was lowest for untrained, uneducated, young motorcycle riders on hot days and short trips.
46. The most deadly injuries to the accident victims were injuries to the chest and head.
47. The use of the safety helmet is the single critical factor in the prevention of reduction of head injury; the safety helmet which complies with FMVSS 218 is a significantly effective injury countermeasure.
48. Safety helmet use caused no attenuation of critical traffic sounds, no limitation of precrash visual field, and no fatigue or loss of attention; no element of accident causation was related to helmet use.
49. FMVSS 218 provides a high level of protection in traffic accidents, and needs modification only to increase coverage at the back of the head and demonstrate impact protection of the front of full facial coverage helmets, and insure all adult sizes for traffic use are covered by the standard.
50. Helmeted riders and passengers showed significantly lower head and neck injury for all types of injury, at all levels of injury severity.
51. The increased coverage of the full facial coverage helmet increases protection, and significantly reduces face injuries.
52. There is no liability for neck injury by wearing a safety helmet; helmeted riders had less neck injuries than unhelmeted riders. Only four minor injuries were attributable to helmet use, and in each case the helmet prevented possible critical or fatal head injury.
53. Sixty percent of the motorcyclists were not wearing safety helmets at the time of the accident. Of this group, 26% said they did not wear helmets because they were uncomfortable and inconvenient, and 53% simply had no expectation of accident involvement.
So, you don't want to wear a helmet. I think it's your right do whatever you want there. But don't try and rationalize it by coming up with some BS story about how it's safer. I even heard one idiot claim his doctor told him that! If your doctor tells you that, I suggest you find a differant doctor.
If you don't want to wear one, and you're willing to take the risk, then be a man about it. Say, "Yes, I know it's more dangerous. But that's what I like".

PS I took out the part about not caring, although I don't know most of you I wouldn't be indifferent to hearing that you had been hurt(for what ever reason).

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
My son's $600 Shoei full face helmet was sitting on his bed when he died. It was a late night (early morning ride) with his roommates wife on the back, with the other Shoei full face on when she fell off. He died after traveling down a a expance of bob wire and stopped when his head hit a fence post that held up the only gate in the pasture. It was on a country road near base at Ft. Hood Texas. After investigation it was found he went thru a stop sign and was traveling at a high rate of speed when he went out of control. Not one of his brothers tried to stop him and they defended him when they were interviewed during the investigation. This is the Army way. He had been riding since he could hold up a bike. Would his helmet saved his life? Maybe, but it also could have rendered him paralized. I made the decision after two days to disconnect him from life support, knowing he died upon hitting the pole, and let his body go. The head nurse in the ICU said is was one of the worst head injuries he had ever seen. He had brain matter exiting out of his ears, and his brain stem had been severed. He had damage to C2-C4 vert. His brain had bounced around in his stull to the point it was mush....
I was asked to donate his organs, only to find out that in Texas if there is ANY sign of brain wave action that they would not use his major organs for donations. They said there was some kind of inner brain activity...nice to know when you are about to pull the plug. This is a law in only a few states to prevent harvesting of organs on not so dead humans. His beautiful blue eyes were used, tissue was used to save burn victims and much more. He died doing what he loved, riding.
Am I less of a Gold Star Mom because he died on his motorcycle?
My reality is when I get on my bike, he is with me. I wear a full face when I ride my XB9 and use a 3/4 when I am on the lowrider.Bless all those who are serving and have served.

P.S. I talked to him hours before, told him to wear his helmet,,,,more importantly I was able to tell him I love him.......
