If your choke is pulling in by itself,it is not tight enough. Loosen of the backing nut gENTLY turn in the plasticring the front and then re-tighten the lock nut on back. Should be tighter. You may have to do this several times to get the tension right. Your idle should be set at 1050 rpm when hot. Less than that may sound cool but hurts the oil flow and chatging system. I know guys that like to turn the idle down below 750 , according to everything I've read doing this is bad for your motor. Not only does your oil pump not produced enough volume but your stator is barley producing enough power for your ignition system...Mark...
I don't know if anybody has actually answered your very first question.
Is lengthy idling bad????
Though it is better to warm up the engine than not, long idlingcan foul your plugs. Long idling with the choke (enricherer)can foul the plugs, and eventually cause carbon buildup.
A poster up above suggested doing it the way I learned to do ita hundred yrs ago, and that is to warm it till you can feel the heads are starting to warm up. Use the choke enough to fire it up, then push choke in, and keep it idling with the throttle.
